Amaryllis kept its word

In Dec 2010, I bought a Amaryllis bulb in a pot. It grew with few leaves and nothing happened on flowering side, so left the pot in basement and to my surprise, last 2 weeks back I saw it growing with small flower bud. Now here it is with beautiful flowers.

Bulbs

Bulbs are turning out to be trial and error most of the times. One year squirrels enjoyed them, one year I left the pots of deck and figured chilling period is good but not snow. This year, I got them and forgot to pot them and left them in refrigerator. Last month I was able to pot them and due to the warmer than normal weather, I see that they started to grow. I will provide update soon on what happens next.....

Fall Bulb Ritual Preparations

I paid a visit to my local garden center but couldn't resist myself from bringing home bulbs. I picked few tulip bulbs and few hyacinths. Along with them picked Alliums too after getting an advice from a fellow shopper to sow the bulbs along with Allium bulbs to keep away squirrels from digging and eating bulbs. Last year I have put lot many tulip bulbs and half of them have been eaten by squirrels. Oh my sweet squirrels, are you not satisfied by the acorn nuts (we have huge Oak tree) that you are after my bulbs. Time will tell me if I am making the way for beautiful flowers in spring or cooking a gourmet meal for my squirrel :)

Squirrels & Tulips

Its spring time and Tulips have come and almost gone, they are beautiful and indeed a treat for eyes. This is the first time last fall I have planted a lot of bulbs and they have come out great except that I noticed some of the bulbs have been eaten away by squirrels. Looks like squirrels like them :). Next time need to take some precautions.

Garlic in the ground

Last weekend after cleaning the vegatable bed, I planted few garlic bulbs in the ground. In "New England Forum" of gardenweb, fellow gardeners were talking about planting the bulbs before frost and whereas my nearest local nursery was not carrying bulbs and told me that they are going to get them early spring. So, I chose few Organic garlic which I bought for culinary purpose to try and see what will happen.
